Creating A Bamboo Fountain

Posted by on June 13, 2009

A bamboo fountain offers a great way to add mystical accent to your garden.  This interesting fountain hails from Japan where it was created by rice farmers as a way to scare deer away from the rice paddies.  The name “deer chasers” was coined and is still used as another name for the bamboo fountain.

The bamboo fountain found another use with the monks who used them to track their meditation times.  In a time when more people are concerned about their affect on the environment, the bamboo fountain is an ecologically friendly material option.  The bamboo fountain is also popular because of its charm and colloquial appeal.  The bamboo fountain is a flexible model so they can be used both indoors and outdoors.

If you want to make a bamboo fountain, all you need are few simple pieces.  The parts for a bamboo fountain include bamboo, pipe, pump, base, screws, rod, and a container.  For outdoor bamboo fountains, you should use higher quality bamboo that can withstand various weather conditions.  When the bamboo fountain will be used inside, you may want to make it more attractive by polishing the surface.  Other tools necessary to build your own bamboo fountain include a screwdriver, wood saw, and a drill machine.

The first step after you have all the components for your bamboo fountain is to cut the bamboo sticks to required lengths.  There will be three bamboo sticks in the construction.  A stick will hold the nozzle while two other will hold the moving piece on the bamboo fountain.  The moving part of the bamboo fountain will collect and remove water once the water collected increases to certain level.  Then, you will have to drill a hole through the center of the two other bamboo sticks as well as the moving part.  These holes will accommodate the rod that allows the fountain to pivot.

For the second [phase] of construction, you will take a tube and connect it from the pump up through the bamboo.  The top of the pipe is fitted with a bamboo nozzle.  The materials for your bamboo fountain, once put together, will be added to a base.  You know that the bamboo fountain is functioning when the water coming from the nozzle continues running to the moving part of the fountain.

If you’ve read this and realize you don’t want to create a bamboo fountain this way, you can always buy an easy-to-install kit at a home and garden center.

It is good to know how to do maintenance on your bamboo, should you build one.  Maintenance focuses on two areas.  You will focus on the water pump care.  You need to have the water pump below the surface of your retaining pool when running.  Lastly, clean the pump regularly.  You must replace the water in your fountain on a regular schedule.  With fountains that run all the time, this cycle will be less frequent, but water should be to avoid foul smell due to stagnation.
